Expert care for neck pain, nerve compression, and cervical spine disorders

Neck & Cervical Spine Conditions

The cervical spine, or neck, is made up of seven vertebrae that support the head, allow for movement, and protect the spinal cord and nerves that travel to the shoulders, arms, and hands. When a disc, bone, joint, or ligament in the cervical spine becomes damaged or begins to change over time, it can cause symptoms ranging from localized neck pain and stiffness to numbness, tingling, weakness, or problems with balance and coordination.

At Shabani Spine, Dr. Sam Shabani provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for a wide range of cervical spine conditions. His approach begins with identifying the source of your symptoms and understanding how they affect your daily life. Treatment is personalized to each patient, with surgery considered when appropriate based on the diagnosis, symptoms, and individual goals.

Whether you're experiencing persistent neck pain, pain that travels into your arm, weakness or numbness in your hands, or have already been told you may need cervical spine surgery, Dr. Shabani can help you understand your diagnosis and determine the right path forward.

Common Cervical Spine Conditions

Cervical Disc Herniation

A herniated disc in the neck occurs when part of a cervical disc pushes beyond its normal position and irritates or compresses a nearby nerve or the spinal cord. A cervical herniated disc may cause neck or shoulder pain, as well as pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that travels into the arm or hand.

Cervical Spinal Stenosis

Cervical spinal stenosis occurs when the spinal canal or spaces surrounding the nerves become narrowed. This can place pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots and may cause neck pain, stiffness, arm or hand symptoms, weakness, or difficulty with balance and walking.

Cervical Myelopathy

Cervical myelopathy occurs when the spinal cord becomes compressed in the neck. Because the spinal cord carries signals between the brain and the rest of the body, symptoms can extend beyond neck pain. Patients may experience hand weakness, difficulty with fine motor tasks, changes in balance, trouble walking, or weakness in the arms or legs.

Cervical Radiculopathy

Often referred to as a pinched nerve in the neck, cervical radiculopathy occurs when a cervical nerve root becomes compressed or irritated. Symptoms commonly travel from the neck into the shoulder, arm, or hand and can include sharp or burning pain, numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness.

Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease

Over time, the discs between the cervical vertebrae can lose height, hydration, and flexibility. Cervical degenerative disc disease may contribute to chronic neck pain, stiffness, bone spurs, nerve compression, or spinal stenosis. Symptoms and severity can vary significantly from person to person.

Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical spondylosis refers to age-related degenerative changes affecting the discs, joints, and bones of the neck. Sometimes called arthritis of the neck, these changes may cause pain and stiffness or contribute to conditions such as

cervical stenosis, radiculopathy, or myelopathy.
